All you want to know about FELUDA

TATA Sons and CSIR-IGIB (Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology; in New Delhi), developed a test for diagnostic purpose of COVID-19, known as CRISPR COVID-19 test 'FELUDA'.  The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has approved the launch of this test.

Feluda was a fictional detective character, created by Satyajit Ray.

FELUDA - stands for FNCAS9 Editor Limited Uniform Detection Assay. It is for the urgent mass testing and is affordable. The result is fast (within one hour),and accurate.

The test use cutting-edge CRISPR technology for the detection of the virus genetic sequence.

How it works?

The test basically was developed under sickle cell mission, with the cutting-edge  CRISPR-Ca9 technology,  said Dr Anurag Agrawal, Director CSIR-IGIB. This lead to the new dimension, which led to use the technology for detecting the COVID-19, corona virus in the body.

The sensitivity and specificity of the test is much higher than previous tests available.

This is RNA based test. The paper based test contains 2 marking. The first marking shows up when the kit has been properly used, and the second band changes the color, if the virus has been detected at all.

The combination of the CRISPR biology and paper-strip chemistry show the result in few minutes, and if infection is present, the paper based strip will detect the viral infection.

The research team was led by Dr Debojyoti Chakraborty and Dr Souvik Maiti.

The test will help the country to fight against the global pandemic.
